I suspended the start with a piece of rope while tightening it and had to use a long, thin pry bar to keep bolts from spinning. I had to flex one of the tabs that the rubber wiring harness hooks had been slipped over to allow a wire to stay with the harness. Sure a lot of that time was on the two bolts, but I damn sure didn't take the gearbox out. It took about 40 minutes tops. The car cranks fine but something is keeping the starter from disengaging and it's really ticking me off. We actually were able to remove and reinstall both starter bolts from the top. I've been told it's my starter and some bolt or gear not retacting.
Thanks for the follow-up and diagram. But, I have big hands and I managed it. If they replaced it, I would think it needed it. This will be your best bet when diagnosing. Pictures and videos taken while you are driving are strongly discouraged. Could that be the reason? How did you fix the problem? And I didn't replace the crankcase breather hose, since I don't think I broke it. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.
Set aside most of a day to do the repair and see our tech article on removing your intake manifold, so you have the parts you need to reassemble your car the same day. The tiny 3 inch square photos are not sufficient to actually see whats going on. Also disconnect the much smaller wire harness that plugs into the terminals on the back of the starter solenoid. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. Clean the inside of intake manifold thoroughly and be careful not to get any debris inside cylinder head during the procedure. My '98 323is will attempt to turn over, but makes a grinding sound and the engine will not start.
If your car won't turn over, there is a good chance your starter is shot. I think it was an unused wire and that is why I did not mark it. Install new gaskets by pressing in, check that all gaskets are properly seated before installing intake manifold.
