His vanity and brash persona make his interactions with Beatrice argumentative, but at the end of the film, Beatrice and Benedick agree to marry.
The deft balance of light-hearted wit and underlying seriousness enriches the film enormously. Branagh, knowing that conventional low-comedy routines would not prompt anything but empty laughter, had opted to create a kind of surreal diversion. It was and by , who also stars in the film. Her submission to Benedick is as moving as his submission to her. Branagh is pure wonder in the lead and really brings out the whimsy in many of his scenes. At the end of the film, Don John's plot against her and Claudio is revealed and they are happily married as was planned in the beginning. Toss in a giddy bathing scene opener, declarations of love dancing in fountains, masked parties full of tipsy revelers, and you forget you were working hard to understand centuries-old prose.
